As part of developing a knowledgeable Community of Practice who knows the “ins and outs” of economic and social rights in Canada, I wanted to keep you in the loop about the recent report by the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier De Schutter. On Monday March 4th, Mr. De Schutter presented his final report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on his mission to Canada last May. His 10-day trip allowed him to examine food insecurity and meet with a number of local and national organizations, members of various levels of government, Aboriginal groups, business representatives and food producers. De Schutter’s trip and final report have not been well received by the Canadian government, but were welcomed by human rights organizations and concerned individuals across the country who endorse and support his recommendations.
Course experts Leilani Farha and Bruce Porter were at the UN Human Rights Council this week to watch the presentation, hear the response from the Canadian government, and deliver a statement from NGOs on the importance of De Schutters visit and respecting the right to food in Canada.
Canada Without Poverty has a webpage with all of the information, links to presentations, reports and news articles: http://www.cwp-csp.ca/poverty/a-human-rights-violation/the-right-to-food/
Please feel free to explore the page and share with colleagues.
As we continue to prepare for the upcoming Universal Periodic Review of Canada’s human rights record this April, Canada Without Poverty will keep you informed of our activities and upcoming opportunities to take action and get involved. We will also be preparing for a third cohort to take the Economic and Social Rights online course this spring and will let you know when registration is open in case you have colleagues who may be interested.
