The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada
Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A2
Dear Prime Minister,
I am writing to you on to express our grave concern on Canada’s recent voting at the United Nations General Assembly on December 6th.
The UN General Assembly passed nine resolutions in support of Palestinian refugees, displaced persons, operations of UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Conventions for the protections Palestinian civilians – but the majority of Canadians are distressed that our country has taken a stand that is so contrary our historic position protecting human rights and civilians living under conflict – and has instead allied itself with Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, and the United States, rather than most advanced like-minded democracies.
We were so uplifted by the resumption of Canadian funding to UNRWA, seeing it as a major step forward in restoring Canada’s historic role as a leader in promoting of international peace and security, but are devastated by what can only be described as a reversal of that just and honourable position.
We strongly urge Canada to uphold the values prescribed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and to reaffirm the commitment of all Canadians in bringing peace, justice, and freedom to all the peoples of the world – and the Palestinian people should be no exception.
We look forward to an honest discussion with you and all of our Members of Parliament to ensure that Canada will continue to be a world leader in the promotion of peace and justice.
